A report from the World Resources Institutewarns that the world's freshwater systems are sothreatened that they may have difficulty sustaining life, withincreasing water shortages for human use and the extinction of a varietyof freshwater species.
The report, "Pilot Analysis of Global Ecosystems(PAGE): Freshwater Systems," attributes most of the freshwaterdegradation to habitat destruction, dam and canal construction, introduction of non-native species, pollution, and over-exploitation. Inaddition, heavy freshwater pollution also continues to cause majorillness in the Third World, the report states. The report represents part of a comprehensive assessment on how humansare changing the world's ecosystems; however, it does not providerecommendations for improvement.
