As South Carolina continues to experience accelerated growth, the state must better assess and manage its water needs, particularly in light of shared water sources between its fast-growing neighboring states.
"South Carolina should get a better grip on its future water needs before it can make intelligent decisions about transfers from one river basin to another, officials attending a water conference said Thursday.
Dean Moss, general manager of the Beaufort Jasper Water and Sewer Authority, said South Carolina has a better idea of future water needs in some river basins than it does in others but that needs to improve.
Knowing more would help the state make intelligent decisions about whether to oppose water transfers. Moss said he's encouraged that the Legislature is considering a bill to require major basin withdrawals to receive state permission."
