President of Save our Forest and Ranchlands, Duncan McFetridge criticizes San Diegosupervisors and elected officials for their "empty [smart growth]rhetoric" in this Union Tribune opinion editorial.
Citing the failure ofcounty supervisors to respond to several court rulings that the GeneralPlan 2020does not meet state laws, McFetridge asserts that county supervisors arepushing a general plan soft to development interests that would allowsprawl into rural lands and negatively impact 200,000 acres ofwatershed. Additionally, these same officials are spending county moneyand countless employee hours on "smart growth" conferences withoutimplementing the ideas behind it, McFetridge states. He urges countyresidents to demand that elected officials stop the courtroom squabblingand "handholding conferences" and concentrate on crafting a general planthat meets state laws and includes an urban limit line. Until the planis in place, a moratorium should be made for large-scale developments onthe urban-fringe.
