The Alaskan Way Viaduct hugs downtown Seattle's Waterfront. Now there's talk about getting rid of it and opening up access to the waterfront.
"As far as overpasses go, it's no great beauty, as even the Alaskan Way Viaduct's biggest fans will admit. But the double-decker, elevated fragment of State Route 99 that hugs the downtown Seattle waterfront does a quite competent job of helping motorists avoid both the nightmare of Interstate 5 and the central business district's jam-packed streets. That's why proposals that the viaduct be demolished always raise such a hue and cry."
