Conversion Of Rail Line To Bus Guideway Incites Preservationists

Locals in two British villages have rallied together to save a 160-year old train station, which is faces demolition as an unused rail line is converted to the country's longest bus guideway.

"Nearly 2,500 signatures were gathered by Histon and Impington residents who want Cambridgeshire County Council to save 160-year-old Histon station."

"Campaigner Pene Nudds said locals did not want to stop the busway but wanted the station kept and put to a new use."

"The controversial scheme, backed by Cambridgeshire County Council, is said to be the longest in Europe."

"The 15 mile (25km) busway has been planned to follow the disused railway line from Cambridge to Huntingdon."

"The guided busway aims to ease congestion on the A14 and the government is providing £92m towards the cost of the £116m scheme."
