"The building glistens on the shore as a two-story utilitarian experiment in reprocessed wood, reclaimed metal and louvered panoramic windows. It will use less than one-third the energy and one-tenth the water of a conventional office building, say officials of the foundation, the nonprofit group dedicated to protecting the bay's environment from the pollution problems of modern development. [The building] has received the highest rating for excellence from the United States Green Building Council, an industry group that sets standards for pro-environment construction."Innovations include an elaborate cistern system using recycled pickle barrels to salvage rainwater and a heat pump system that uses the earth's geothermal well for cooling and heating.
