In total, Bay Area cities and countieswill be called on to build more than 230,000 new houses by 2006. Citiesare required to amend their general plans to reflect the housingnumbers; however, they are not necessarily required to build all theunits. Nevertheless, many cities say the numbers are too high and theywill be unable to accommodate the growth.A coalition of environmental groups called the Bay Area Transportationand Land Use Coalition is prepared to backABAG in their call for housing. The coalition hopes to pressure citiesto meet their requirements, especially those for affordable housing, through its Fair Share 100K campaign. The group says that buildingaffordable housing inside existing cities, especially near transitcenters, is environmentally sound, and will help alleviate regionalgrowth problems.
