The nation's new suburbia is expanding at a frightening rate, "claiming a chunk of open land the size of Chicago" every six months.

The new suburbia--born out of the nation's sustained economic upswing--is pressing farther into the American countryside than its post-World War II predecessor, every six months claiming a chunk of open land the size of Chicago. Fertile Midwestern farmland, historic Civil War battlefields and scenic Western landscapes are being supplanted by subdivisions and office parks.
