The study begins to see if Hollywood can afford independence. The vote to secede may come in 2002.

Enough signatures were obtained to qualify Hollywood for a secession-from-LA study. With the San Fernando Valley and Harbor areas also wanting to pull out of LA, the population of Los Angeles would be reduced by half and would give less political clout to the city that is currently larger than the population of 25 states. Opposition is fierce.
