"Small islands threatened by rising sea levels are watching in dismay as U.N. climate talks on global warming make tortuous progress ahead of a Friday night deadline for sealing an agreement." Countries such as Maldives, a nation with 80 percent of its land mass below one meter elevation, are threatened by a one meter rise in sea level due to global warming. "Low-lying countries found scant comfort from turbulent but unproductive proceedings on Wednesday when the United States and the European Union clung to opposing positions over how to go about cutting emissions of greenhouse gases."
