An government study has found that the U.S. could meet global warming goals while boosting the economy and lowering costs.
According to a report commissioned by the U.S. Department ofEnergy (DOE) ( http://www.doe.gov ) entitled Scenarios for a CleanEnergy Future (http://www.ornl.gov/ORNL/Energy_Eff/CEF.htm ) , theimplementation of existing energy technologies and domestic policiescould move the United States 75% toward reducing global warmingpollution to 1990 levels. These strategies could reduce greenhouse gasemissions, cut air pollution, and relieve oil dependence, in addition toconferring economic benefits, the report states. By implementing theseenergy practices, U.S. energy bills in 2020 would be $124 billion lowerthan if current practices continue. Scientists from the study assertthat the U.S. could easily reach it emission reduction goals in theKyoto Protocol through policy implementation and the "legitimate use of the Kyoto treaty mechanisms."
