The Kansas City Council has passed an ordinance that will tightly restrict outdoor billboard advertising within the city. The ordinance effectively bans new billboards from all city streets.
"In city hearings over the past couple days, industry representatives hinted that they would sue the city. However, Bob Fessler, who manages the local office of Lamar Advertising, said the company hasn't made any decisions. He predicted that the ordinance will be very effective in halting additional billboards. It prohibits new billboards on city streets and imposes strict new standards on the location of new billboards alongside highways."
"Under the new parameters, he said, 'There's not a legal location on any state or federally controlled artery. We don't think (the ordinance) is strict. We think it's a ban.'"
"The bill, pushed by 6th District Councilman John Sharp, would outlaw construction of more billboards on city streets. It would not apply to highways that pass through town."
