County officials in Georgia have once again extended their moratorium on residential rezonings as they weigh whether changes will encourage sprawl. The latest extension will stretch the original 90-day moratorium to nearly a year.

"A moratorium on residential rezonings that Forsyth County officials first thought might last three months could wind up lasting almost a year as commissioners debate whether proposed changes to their zoning rules might encourage sprawl."

"The moratorium was first imposed Jan. 4 when advocates of slowing the county's booming residential growth gained a three-person majority on the five-member commission."

"The goal was to give the new majority time to assess how much stress the growth had put on the county's water supply, sewer lines and roads and to put in place requirements for larger lot sizes and less density in residential developments."
