The U.S.Department of Commerce may deny a request by the California Coastal Commission for a seat to review plans.
California has the most rigorous Coastal Act in the nation. To insure that it has a future role in shaping habitat conservation plans, the Commission wants a seat at the Department of Commerce's table. Opponents say that this will add another layer of bureaucracy, and that it would extend the Commission's jurisdiction inland. The Commission states that immediate approval is necessary, since the Bush administration will create a hostile environment.
