Two major development projects for downtown St. Louis were announced this week including plans for a headquarters relocating from the suburbs to downtown and the conversion of the closed St. Louis Centre shopping mall into a mixed use development.
Over $650 million of development was announced this week as two separate but major development projects were announced. On Sunday, Centene Corp, currently located in the St. Louis suburb of Clayton announced it was relocating its headquarters to Ballpark Village adjacent to St. Louis' Busch Stadium. On Tuesday, St. Louis-based Pyramid Cos. announced it would develop a six-block retail and residential district which includes the now closed St. Louis Centre, a 1980s enclosed shopping mall.
"The lingering question, unanswerable at this point, is whether downtown can sustain not just those two projects, but others also in the pipeline, including the $387 million Ballpark Village - which is largely separate from the Centene project- and the $495 million Pinnacle Entertainment Inc. casino called Lumière Place."
"To the mayor the two developments are proof that downtown revitalization is 'real.' Centene will bring 1,200 jobs to the market, Slay said, and Mercantile Exchange will help revitalize the 'last remaining major eyesore in downtown, at the entrance to the convention district.'"
