The Irvine City Council voted to retain local control of a plan to transform the El Toro Airbase into a large park.
"A new City Council majority revived a plan Tuesday night to transform the closed El Toro Marine base into a "Great Park." The project, considered an alternative to building an airport on the former base, calls for a 3,000-plus-acre park comparable to Balboa Park in San Diego. The El Toro Reuse Planning Authority and south-county leaders support another idea, the Millennium Plan. It calls for homes, businesses and a park on the land. The city's next step is to win wide support for the Great Park."
