The city is undertaking a beautification project for its network of retention ponds.
"It's not the French Riviera. But some waterfront property here is getting a facelift. They're big and muddy. But east Tampa's vast network of stormwater retention ponds do their job, keeping this once flood-prone neighborhood mostly high and dry. Yet civic leaders view the ponds as a necessary evil. Many are ringed with unsightly, 6-foot-tall, chain-link fencing topped with barbed wire. Landscaping is lacking. And illegal dumping is common. For a neighborhood struggling to improve its image, the ponds are simply an eyesore. So, heeding community complaints, the city has embarked on an extensive project to improve the aesthetics of these massive rain catchers."
