Bay Area Transit Must Involve Public

A review by a consulting group determined that the Metropolitan Transportation Commission must work to involve citizens in the decision making process.

"The Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC), which coordinates and finances transportation in the nine county Bay Area, does not involve the public enough in itstransit decisions, according to a review of the commission's public involvement made by Lew Edwards Consulting Group. The commission agreed with these findings at a meeting where only three members of the public attended, in contrast to the eight commissioners present. Earlier this year, the U.S. Department of Transportation ordered the evaluation and also told the commission that they needed to improve service to low-income and under served communities. According to some members of the public, the MTC not only fails to involve the public in making decisions, it also fails to listen to the comments it does receive. The commission responded that it is planning a more interactive website and that some publications will be translated into Asian languages."
