Anger Grows At Acropolis Museum Demolitions

Greek and international protest grows over proposed demolition of historic buildings between Tschumi's Acropolis Museum and the Acropolis hill.

"Bernard Tschumi's Acropolis Museum - an ultra-modernist building in the heart of the Greek capital, Athens - was controversial in 2004 when it was proposed, contributing to the fall of the PASOK government."

"Now it is built, and the current government proposes demolishing listed buildings and mature trees between it and the Acropolis. And why? To improve the view from the cafeteria."

"The listed buildings and trees line the beautiful shady road that leads from the heart of the city to the Acropolis and Parthenon. The project brief required these buildings to be kept, because they screened the museum from the road. But Tschumi built his museum too low, and now officials want to destroy the screen of buildings and trees to open up the view..."

"Prominent public figures in Greece and elsewhere have joined in a chorus of condemnation. You can add your signature to the protest."
