Water Limits Northeast Florida Growth Beyond 2030

Groundwater supplies in Northeast Florida may only be able to support growth until 2030, when demands on water will overshoot available resources.

"Northeast Florida is going to need at least 554 million gallons of fresh water every day to continue growing past 2030."

"That's 180 million gallons more than the region is using today, according to projections prepared by the St. Johns River Water Management District. The additional need would be enough water to fill more than 270 Olympic swimming pools."

"The regulatory agency is reviewing the numbers to identify local needs, environmental impacts and where the water will come from."

"Through 2025, groundwater should suffice, according to current analysis. An update to the study, extending it to 2030, is expected to be complete by the end of 2008."
