Charlotte Residents Vote In Favor of Transit ... Again

The effort to repeal Mecklenburg County's half-cent transit tax was defeated by a wide margin at the polls on Tuesday.

"In 1998, Mecklenburg County, North Carolina voted to enact a half-cent sales tax to support expanded bus service and the construction of a multiple-line mass transit system. After a series of cost overruns a measure to repeal the tax was placed on the ballot for this November's election, just a few weeks short of the opening of Charlotte's first LRT line. Mecklenburg County voters soundly defeated this measure, demonstrating overwhelming support for transit in the Charlotte area."
