The daylight savings time change earlier this month has been blamed for a rash of pedestrian deaths and injuries from car collisions in Toronto. The city is looking to police to step up enforcement to cut down the number of injuries.
"Each of the recent pedestrian collisions took place either early in the morning or at the dinner hour, which became darker last week after the switch back to standard time."
"Pedestrians and drivers haven't adjusted to the dark commute home, said Toronto police Traffic Services Staff Sgt. Allan Finlay."
"A 2001 study from the University of Michigan examined a decade of American collision data and found there were 65 fatal pedestrian collisions in the week before the fall reversion to standard time, and 227 the week after – a threefold increase the study called 'a sharp rise in fatal crashes over the transition from light to dark.'"
