San Francisco is studying a London-style plan to charge drivers a fee when they travel to high-traffic areas, like downtown SF, during peak commute hours. But is congestion pricing a boon for public transportation? Or the death of downtown?
Planners in San Francisco are using a computer program to determine where the highest traffic areas in the city are.
Automatic transponders would deduct a certain fee from drivers' banking accounts whenever their cars enter the downtown core.
Many in the city are concerned that charging a fee to drive downtown would turn shoppers away.
