The President has decided not to give the Artic National Wildlife Refuge a national monument status.
According to the President, the ANWR has legislative protection already. This 19-million-acre preserve is where 130,00 caribou give birth yearly. It is also home to more than 200 other species. Oil drilling supporters in Alaska are happy with the decision. They hope that new technologies will allow them to access the refuge for oil drilling activity. Bush has said that oil drilling in the refuge is a part of his energy plan.
