Logging and mining has been halted in the Sierra Nevadas. This will increase protections for old trees and wildlife.
Conservationists are happy with the decision and call it a major step forward in protecting the Sierra Nevada ecosystems which have been degraded by decades of logging and road building. Critics say there are too many trees in the woods and that harvesting is needed for forest health. The Forest Service states that timbering will be carried out to reduce the risk of fire rather than for the sake of lumbering.
