How do state and local governments go about integrating environmental criteria into purchasing? EPA has published a report that describes green purchasing strategies, productevaluation, "how-to" advice, and brief reports on green purchasingpioneers at the state and local level. Included is information aboutKing County and state of Washington programs. The federal government purchases more than $250 billion worth of goods and services annually. Recognizing that purchasing decisions can have environmental consequences, the federal government is incorporatingenvironmental considerations into its purchasing processes. As mandated inExecutive Order 13101, Greening the Government Through Waste Prevention, Recycling, and Federal Acquisition, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency(EPA) issued guidance to help federal agencies consider environmental concernswhen making purchasing decisions. EPA’s guidance establishes general principles to help identify products and services that have a reduced impact on human health and the environment.
