Alameda County, CA, wants to generate electricity by installing solar panels on housing units of the Santa Rita jail.

"The system will provide enough energy for about 600 homes, or about 20 percent of Santa Rita's energy needs. The photovoltaic system and other conservation measures implemented this year could cut the county's electric bill by roughly $200,000 a year...In addition to converting sunlight into electricity, the solar panels provide extra insulation and extend roof life."
