"For high-speed rail to be successful in the United States, reducing the time it takes to get from point A to point B may ultimately be more important than setting speed records. ..The high-speed passenger rail movement in the United States, with the exception of the northeast corridor from Washington to Boston, has progressedat a snail's pace. The reason is that Amtrak and officials in most states havedecided an incremental approach is the most cost effective and efficient way toraise speeds on passenger trains."
