Michigan is reviving an eight-year-old plan to create a landmark district as a form of revitalization.
"City landmarks officials are reviving an eight-year-old plan to create a landmark district on Michigan between Randolph and 11th. And a street fight has come with it. Twenty property owners--including biggies like Bob Winslow's U.S. Equities, Columbia College, the Chicago Hilton & Towers and the Central Michigan Avenue Association--are seeking to block the proposed Historic Michigan Boulevard District, according to city Planning Department records. The group wants the city to not use landmark status to protect the historic streetscape. They say the Lakefront Protection Ordinance and design guidelines for new buildings are all that's needed."
