The Board of Supervisors approved a six-month ban on the construction of live-work lofts in the city, and also imposed new rules on commercial developers to pay for affordable housing.
"The two pieces of legislation signal a clear change in how the city views development under the new Board of Supervisors, which was sworn in five weeks ago on a promise to reverse course on Mayor Willie Brown's land use policies. Similar attempts the past few years to curb development have failed. The ban on new live-work projects will put a temporary halt on the controversial developments that have changed the landscape in such neighborhoods as the Mission District, Potrero Hill and the South of Market. Critics blame the proliferation of the high-priced lofts for pushing artists, low-income families, small businesses and others struggling financially out of San Francisco."
