Students at UNC-Chapel Hill voted to help support a fare free bus system in the city that could carry 3 million rides.
"Chapel Hill and Carrboro could be one step closer to offering free bus rides as an incentive to get people to leave their cars at home. On Tuesday, students at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill overwhelming approved a referendum saying they're willing to pay an extra $8.49 each semester to help Chapel Hill Transit operate a fare-free bus system. Of the 5,458 ballots cast, 3,882 students, or 71 percent of the voters, checked the "yes" box. The proposed student fee increase must be approved by UNC-CH trustees and the UNC Board of Governors. Then the towns of Chapel Hill and Carrboro, and university administrators, must decide how much they're willing to pay to make the service free for nearly 3 million riders."
