Rebuilding The Bay Area's Transit Hub

Plans to refurbish San Francisco's Transbay Terminal have become a concerted regional effort as agencies from five counties have thrown their support behind improving the aging transportation hub. The rehabilitation plan for the Terminal, which currently houses Municipal Railway, Samtrans, Golden Gate Transit, AC Transit and Greyhound, would expand to include an extension of Caltrain and future rail service to Los Angeles and the Central Valley, among other services. Because the plans call for around $900 million worth of rebuilding, the project will be funded by both the agency conglomerate and private backers. The plans to rebuild the Terminal also have support from both Mayor Brown and from San Francisco voters. Transportation planners involved in the project hope that the county agency partnership will mark a new period of regional cooperation that will facilitate the completion of the project.
