A year after a new freeway was completed in Southern California, traffic data shows increased use. Officials plan to widen the freeway to handle the increased load.
"Eastbound traffic on the 210 east of the 215 to Waterman Avenue increased 21 percent during the afternoon peak period between May and October 2007, according to San Bernardino Associated Governments, or Sanbag, the county's transportation planning agency."
"The increase was 23 percent for early morning eastbound traffic at the same location, the agency's analysis shows."
"Westbound traffic in the same spot grew 17 percent during the afternoon peak and climbed 11percent during the morning peak, the data indicate. The numbers are not surprising, said Ty Schuiling, Sanbag's director of planning and programming."
"Officials plan to widen the freeway to reduce the congestion, but any improvements are years away."
"The 210 widening could be ready for construction by 2015, but it must compete for funding with improvement projects on other local freeways."
