Fort Worth, Texas officials try to tackle the thorny issue of gas pipelines snaking through residential neighborhoods.
"Already, major gas companies - whose pipeline divisions can legally condemn property - have begun acquiring rights of way through residential areas.
Most gas pipelines are regulated by the U.S. Department of Transportation or the Texas Railroad Commission, and cities can't impose any additional safety requirements. The city can regulate the gathering lines that run between the wellhead and the meter where gas is sold for further use, Assistant City Attorney Sarah Fullenwider said.
Gas companies can take land and rights of way for pipelines, just as a city can. Some residents have questioned whether the companies should have that power, since residents and even the city government are shut out of route selection."
