Commuters in Sydney, Australia are risking fines rather than waiting in traffic. Along one stretch of highway, over 1000 cheaters were documented in just one hour.
"'Poorly designed transit lanes are doing nothing to encourage car sharing and probably have the opposite effect,' [NRMA spokeswoman Lisa] Kable said.
A RTA spokesman confirmed the value of transit lanes but admitted there were no plans to make them more effective despite 'surveys indicating frequent illegal use'.
In the UK a specialist camera is being trialled which automatically counts car occupants, allowing for enforcement of transit lanes. However, its inventor warns it needs to be coupled with infrastructure upgrades."
