Responding to increases in gang activity, the city of Smyrna has made it a crime for minors to possess spray paint or felt-tip markers in an effort to curb graffiti and vandalism.
"Smyrna officials are trying to disarm gang members. But they're not taking their guns. They're taking their spray paint. Smyrna may be the first city in Georgia to ban the sale of what police call "graffiti tools" to those under 18. The ordinance, adopted Monday night, also makes it a misdemeanor for anyone under 18 to possess spray paint or felt-tip markers. A second ordinance requires property owners to remove graffiti within five days of being notified by the city."
