"Now that the Fresh Kills landfill in Staten Island is closed, the daily journeyfor about 12,000 tons of the city'sresidential trash has become immensely more complex and expensive. What had been a quick and modestlypriced trip to Fresh Kills is now an up to400- mile trek, a six-day-a-week undertaking that involves an armada of tractor trailers and rail cars running upand down the East Coast, an extra 900 cityworkers and about $200 million a year innew costs to taxpayers.
