Detroit's Riverfront Preservation Efforts

City leaders and activists are working on reversing the effects of a century's worth of neglect of the Detroit River.

This week, the Mayor of Detroit announced that the city will pursue land around a riverfron casino development for parks and open green space. Earlier in the week, civic leaders and environmentalists met at the University of Windsor to consider the state of the Detroit River. Similar efforts are contining around the region. "[W]hat's happening on the Detroit River isn't just a trend, it's a phenomenon -- with at least 10 major initiatives and hundreds of millions of dollars dedicated to preserve and enhance our most visible and important natural resource."
