"Omar Bradley inherited Compton’s dubious prominence and its even more dubious mystique when he was elected mayor in 1993, a peak year for gangsta rap and a scant year after the ‘92 civil unrest. How much he has tried to counter the city’s lawless, badass image with appeals to community and calls to progress, and how much he simply glories in that image and uses it to his personal arm-twisting advantage, have been hotly discussed ever since." Compton is poised for a comeback, but his nepotism and strong-arm tactics have kept the city isolated.
