Since 1950, the city has experienced phenomenal growth. Planning experts are wondering how long it can last.

For fifty years the Atlanta Metro region has been growing, increasing its population five-fold and surpassing other southern cities like St. Louis, New Orleans and Baltimore to become the 11th largest metropolitan area in the nation. Planning experts wonder if the growth will continue, or if the problems associated with growth will push the city into a downturn. The article points to Los Angeles, the nation's second largest metro area that has continued to grow despite traffic and pollution concerns, as evidence of a continuation of the current growth pattern in Atlanta.
