Miami's Tri-Rail system is getting a boost in the form of federal dollars to complete a proposed expansion of the rail line.
"An intense lobbying effort by Rep. Mark Foley of Palm Beach and South Florida transit officials paid off this week with the Bush administration's decision to seek $85 million to help Tri-Rail expand its service and add tracks over the next four years. That allocation, if approved by Congress later this year, would help Tri-Rail secure funding for its $327 million project to complete parallel tracks along the 72-mile corridor from West Palm Beach to Miami." The system has historically been plagued by low ridership since its inception in 1989.
