In a Rose Garden event last week, President George W. Bush told a summitofU.S. mayors that continued renewal of American cities requires fivecommitments: better education, broader homeownership, faster economicgrowth, easier environmental cleanup, and stronger communities andcharities. The mayors had gathered in Washington, D.C., for the U.S.Conference of Mayors National Summit on Investment in the New AmericanCity."When we look at our cities," Bush told them, "we see our highestaspirations, our incredible diversity, our greatest achievements, andourmost pressing challenges."
