Preservationists in Buffalo, NY, have created a nonprofit organization to salvage historic fixtures from buildings about to be demolished.
"Architectural thieves have done good business in Buffalo in recent years, stealing doorknobs, fireplace mantels, porch columns and leaded-glass windows from abandoned historic homes throughout the city. Now Buffalo preservationists plan to do the same thing for everyone's gain. They're creating their own salvage organization - a nonprofit group that can remove historic fixtures from soon-to-be-demolished buildings and resell them to local preservationists at below-market rates."
