A bill that passed the Oregon House last week directs TriMet to hire 'greeters' to work at light-rail stations.
"The greeters would be charged with answering riders' questions and reporting any problems or safety concerns.
They might carry walkie-talkie radios but they certainly wouldn't be "junior police," said state Rep. Jefferson Smith, D-Portland."
"Last fall, TriMet heightened security on MAX trains and said it would add six cameras to Gresham light-rail stations. The city of Gresham also put more police officers on patrol in transit areas.
The bill would complement those actions, Rep. Nick Kahl, D-Portland, said during a brief floor debate. It would foster more positive behavior and make people feel safer, Kahl said."
