In Detroit, Tiger Stadium Demolition Enters the Home Stretch

After a long battle by preservationists, what's left of the 97-year-old ballpark -- home of the Detroit Tigers from 1912-1999 -- is being demolished.

"Two machines went to work today on the what remains of the old stadium. One tore through the stadium structure, and the other picked up the falling debris and moved it to the side.

Debris fell as water misters sprayed the area to keep the rising dust down. The sound of heavy machines and falling materials filled the air as onlookers watched, mostly silent, in shock.

Attorney Frederick Berry, representing the Detroit Economic Development Corp., said the agency has given the [Old Tiger Stadium Conservancy] "extension after extension" to try to meet financial deadlines for raising money toward the proposed $27 million commercial redevelopment of what remains of the park.""
