At 27 years old, Denver's 16th Street Mall is in need of an upgrade. A team of consultants has recently released their recommendation of what needs to be done to rehabilitate one of Denver's premier public spaces.
"A proper upgrade for downtown Denver's 16th Street Mall, including a complete reconstruction of granite pavers in the bus lanes, will cost $51 million, according to a task force charged with rehabilitating the 27-year-old mall.
The group's "recommended alternative" includes removing all the pavers in the transit lanes, flipping and resurfacing them, and resetting and resealing the granite squares. Pavers in the mall's pedestrian walkways, which undergo far less wear and tear, would get a less rigorous makeover called "repair in place," involving resurfacing them and resealing their joints without removing the pavers."
