Making Temporary Use of Empty Development Lots

Empty lots are scattered throughout San Francisco, sites of would-be towers that have been temporarily put off by the building bust. Instead of letting these lots sit empty until construction, some are finding ways to utilize them in the meantime.

"At least a dozen large development sites in the city's South of Market district now sit empty or covered by asphalt because of the recession. If history is any guide, developers will either leave them fenced off or use them as parking lots.

But there's another alternative - one that, if successful, could influence cities across the nation."

Some of the ideas others cities have innovated for using these spaces include sculpture displays, temporary parks and food vending areas.
