Several communities in South Florida are suing the state government over the recent passage of a law that allows exurban development to occur even if there is no adequate transportation infrastructure in place.
Critics argue the law encourages sprawl, and are hoping their lawsuit will stop it from allowing unchecked development in exurban areas.
But supporters argue the bill is meant to encourage infill, which eventually convinced the legislature to pass the bill.
"Both legislative chambers passed it the measure on the final day of the 2009 session after changing some House provisions the drew opposition from the state's chief planning official.
The previous law required roads and other transportation facilities to be in place before development can occur."
