Fuel Cells May Help Cut Truck Emissions

This week, researchers from the University of California at Davis (UCD) introduced a new technology that will allow truck drivers to use appliances without keeping their diesel engines running. Fuel cells, which generate power while emitting virtually no pollutants, may be the energy choice of the future. Researchers estimate that idling big rigs burn up to eight gallons of diesel fuel per night. Diesel engines emit pollutants that can cause serious health problems. The new fuel cell technology can improve fuel efficiency while reducing harmful emissions. Truck drivers, worried about the health effects of diesel engine emissions, welcome the new technology. Researchers estimate that fuel cells could be used in average cars within the next five years.
