The region's sprawl along I-85 is beginning to draw comparisions to the sprawl of Northern New Jersey.

"In 1979, Gov. Jim Hunt warned that North Carolina faced "creeping New Jersey" if it did not do something about its urban sprawl. More than two decades later, New Jersey is no longer creeping; it's here. The only thing missing are the Sopranos and Jimmy Hoffa's body." Under its facade of lush green communities, the region is experiencing urban problems of increasing traffic jams and air pollution.
